Sea lice are a major problem for juvenile pink and chum salmon on the British Columbia coast. Since these tiny salmon migrate to the ocean shortly after hatching, they travel through concentrations of sea lice near salmon farms when they are still very vulnerable to parasitic infection. Coho and sockeye salmon, which spend the first few years of their lives in fresh water, are less susceptible.
