We will be proudly paddling Werner paddles on our kayak expedition. Phil will paddle a straight-shaft Kalliste and carry the Camano as a spare. I will carry the Athena, also in straight-shaft, and the Little Dipper as a backup. Both of my paddles will be small-shaft diameter.
We both decided on straight-shaft vs. bent shaft paddles for a number of reasons. We opted to both carry 220cm paddles, to fit our our 22′ beam Current Designs kayaks. It seemed unlikely that I, at 5′ 0″, and Phil, at 6″ tall, would have the exact same grip on the paddle. We’ve both used straight shafts exclusively in the past and are most comfortable bracing and rolling with a straight shaft. Moreover, we both like to be able to change grips on the paddle depending on the circumstances and the straight shaft seems better suited for this flexibility.
We look forward to posting pictures soon!
